Zenith Energy Signs Historic Customer Contract, Becoming Largest Renewable Fuel Terminal in Oregon
New supply nearly doubles the renewable fuel supply at Portland Terminal
PORTLAND, Ore. — Zenith Energy, a leading bulk liquid storage company, announced today it has signed a contract for the daily delivery of 378,000 gallons of renewable diesel to its Portland Terminal. Storage capacity for the renewable product will replace capacity previously used for crude oil and result in the daily delivery of 840,000 gallons of renewable fuel consisting of renewable diesel, sustainable aviation fuel and biodiesel. The new supply comes at a time when both the City of Portland and State of Oregon are seeking to reduce carbon emissions from the transportation sector, but the region needs more low-carbon, renewable fuel in order to achieve this goal. The new contract advances Zenith’s commitment to the city to eliminate crude oil storage at its Portland Terminal and replace it with renewable fuel.
“Portland has pledged to be a leader in renewable fuels, and this new contract helps bring that goal to fruition,” said Grady Reamer, Zenith’s Chief Commercial Officer. “When it is fully implemented, our Portland Terminal will be one of the most important renewable fuel storage hubs in the nation.”
The additional supply of renewable diesel will be available for delivery in December 2025. With the customer contract in place, Zenith’s forward-looking contracted renewable fuel storage – current storage plus future storage under contract – will represent 66.4% of the terminal’s capacity. This puts the company on track to have all its crude oil replaced with renewable fuel by October 2027, which is the commitment it made to the city of Portland. It will also mark a major milestone as the contracted volume of renewable fuel amounts to twice that of crude oil.
“There is a desperate need for more renewable fuel in the region,” said Reamer. “From transit buses and municipal fleets to commercial trucks and marine vessels, there is simply not enough supply to meet current and future demand. By replacing crude oil with renewable fuel, we are proud to be helping the region achieve its carbon reduction goals.”
Oregonians currently consume approximately 2,310,000 gallons per day of diesel fuel, of which only 20% is renewable. (Oregon DEQ projects 844.7 million gallons of diesel consumption in 2024.) Lack of storage and supply is the limiting factor of converting the remaining 80% to renewable fuel. The transportation sector is responsible for 35% of Oregon’s carbon emissions, larger than any other sector, and renewable diesel has significant carbon reduction benefits. Both the state of Oregon and Portland have identified transportation as a major focus for carbon reduction, but progress has been slow due to the supply of renewable fuels. Zenith’s Portland terminal will begin to address that supply imbalance.
